According to a study published in the General Dentistry, elderly people who live in nursing homes are at greater risk for oral health problems compared to elderly people who live independently. In the study evidence shows that older Americans are at risk for greater oral health problems than other groups because of age and the inability to get to a dentist’s office due to an existing medical condition or lack of transportation.
According to the report, greater awareness among health care providers and caregivers can do much to ensure the elderly receive good oral health care, primarily through assessments of the patient’s mouth. It is a myth that as you age you are destined to lose your teeth with age. If fact there is no reason seniors cannot keep their teeth for a lifetime, since tooth loss is simply the result of an oral disease and not the aging process. Many seniors do not visit a dentist even once a year, which is one of the key preventive strategies in ensuring that teeth last a lifetime. Family members should encourage seniors who are disabled or have trouble getting around to seek dental care, In addition for seniors who may be planning to enter a nursing home, they should inquire about on-site dental care.
