As stated in a prior post getting a second opinion is advise whenever you feel unsure about a dental treatment plan provided to you by a dentist. However it is also important to know what you need to do in order to make sure you have benefits under your dental insurance plan for a second opinion.
If you have a dental PPO plan it may be a little easier to get a second dental opinion since you are not assigned to any one provider. However most PPO insurance plan will only cover for one set of X-rays a year. Therefore you may have to have your X-rays transferred to the new dental office where you are getting the second opinion. Transferring X-rays should not be too hard to do but the original dental office may charge you for it.
If you have an HMO dental plan you will need to call the insurance company in order to change dental providers. Under and HMO plan you are assigned to the dentist you pick and although you can change dentist within the plan network you have to call in the change. You do not just want to see any dentist even if they are in the network without letting the insurance company know before hand

With X-rays the dentist is about to detect hidden tooth decay, the presence of a cyst or tumor, determining the presence of permanent teeth, detect oral cancer problems, root involvement with the sinuses and to help determine whether or not to remove primary teeth

Whitening toothpastes does contain chemicals or polishing agents that can help to remove surface stains from teeth. Therefore if your teeth are darker then they used to be due to surface stains, whitening toothpaste can help to brighten your teeth. On the other hand if your teeth are darker due to deeper stains, either because of injury, age or certain medications, whitening toothpastes will not give effective results. Unlike bleaching whitening toothpastes do not change the color of the teeth to a whiter shade. If you fall into this case scenario then talk to your dentist to find out your other teeth whitening options.

An annual maximum occupational exposure for radiation workers in the United States is 5,000 millirems (measure for radiation). When you spread low doses out over a period of time, it is not as destructive to the body because it has time to recover.
To help put this in perspective to dental x-rays, you would need to have 2,000 dental x-rays to equal the radiation in 1 mammogram. To reach that maximum safety dose, you would need to have to take approximately 10,000 dental x-rays. On average people receive 3 dental bitewings worth of radiation a day just from being outside in the sun or around concrete buildings and roads.

Question: I am poor an can not afford dental care but I know I have cavities. Where can I go for free dental care.
Answer: Sadly not to many places offer free dental care. However you do have a few options. Go to the America Dental Association website and see if they have any programs for free dental care. This happens often in the month of February, since February is oral health care month.
See if there are any dental schools and or clinics. These places will often provide lower cost dental care and adjust payments to what you can afford.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, competitive swimmers may be at risk for developing yellowish-brown or dark-brown stains on their teeth. Athlete swimmers who are swimming more then six hours a week are exposing their teeth to large amounts of chemically treated water.
Water which contains chemical additives like antimicrobials, which give the water a higher pH than saliva, causing salivary proteins to break down quickly and form organic deposits on swimmer’s teeth. The result is swimmer’s calculus, hard, brown tartar deposits that appear predominantly on the front teeth. Swimmers who notice the stains should talk to their dentist and perhaps increase their dental visits to three or four times a year.

I would like to get an inexpensive dental insurance plan for my six year old son. I do not have much money, and I am only looking to get dental insurance for my son dental health care. He has been to the dentist once and without insurance it was very costly, I worry that he may get new cavities or something. Can you advise if you have any dental plan that can help me afford proper dental care for my son.
Answer: Dental HMO insurance plan are normally the more affordable dental insurance option however they will also normally require at least one adult on the plan with a minor. Making you pay for a couple plan instead of an individual plan for just your minor son. Cost for a couple plan can range around $15 to $30 a month depending on the plan. Another cost saving option would be a dental discount plan. Many dental discount plan will let you buy the plan for only a minor. They can range around $7 – $15 a month depending on the plan. A dental discount plan is a good low cost way of reducing your dental care cost.
