How Important is it to Use Dental Floss?

If you want to make sure that you keep your teeth healthy then you need to floss them. There may be some debate about how many times a day you should floss, since some people are harder with floss than others, you should floss at least once a day. If you go to your favorite store that sells toothpaste you’ll see tons of brands of dental floss. You’ll also see different flavors, mint, lime and the standard kind your dentist uses.

Dental floss is better than using a toothpick to clean in between your teeth because stabbing a sharp object into your tender gums can cause bleeding. Flossing also gets out the plaque and bacteria that can form in your mouth during the day and after meals.

There is a choice on the market between dental floss and dental tape. Dental floss is a usually the preferred choice of people who want to maintain healthy teeth and gums. The proper way to floss is to get in between each tooth and wrap the dental floss around the tooth in a “C” shape. Then move the floss back and forth, reverse this method for both sides of the tooth and you’ll remove any food particles that have nestled in there.

Dental tape works the same way, it’s been shown to pick up more food particles and it’s easier on the gums. It’s really a personal choice, it may cost a little more than dental floss but aren’t your teeth worth every penny?

Much of the dental floss on the market has a wax base, this helps you to move the floss in between your teeth easier, and this doesn’t mean that you should be harsh with its use. If you experience a little “pink in the sink” then you might want to consult your dentist, this might be a sign of something more serious than removing plaque too abrasively.

One interesting thing about flossing your teeth is that your saliva glands are activated once you begin flossing. Your brain thinks that you are putting food in your mouth so your saliva begins to work its magic. If this happens don’t be alarmed, it’s just your body doing what it’s supposed to do. If you need to keep a towel nearby do so, you don’t want the floss slipping off your fingers.

The most important thing about flossing is do it regularly, every night before bed. This allows your gums to heal if you’ve flossed too hard. If you have filings then flossing around them is very important, bacteria can hide and cause further tooth decay. Flossing for children is important too, their teeth are growing and moving and keeping them healthy will lessen their trips to the dentist when they get older. It will also give them a good habit to adopt when they have a full set of teeth to take care of for them selves.

If you want to maximize your flossing habit then rinse with mouthwash or a plaque rinse to make sure than any loose particles are washed away. Is dental floss important, it sure is, just ask your dentist, he’ll show you some pictures to confirm your decision.
