Do California residents have to have Health Insurance in order to have Dental Insurance.

I am new to California been here now about four months. I have a full time job that offers me medical but not dental benefits. I was told that if you are CA resident, you have to have a health Insurance in order to have a dental insurance. I do not need both since I get major medical with my job.
